OPEN ACCESS COMMITMENT

Published JESS articles are available online without reader subscription fees or an embargo. Reuse must comply with the license identified on the individual article and with applicable third-party rights.

Section 01

Open Access Philosophy

JESS considers the accessibility of scholarly research an important foundation for scientific communication, academic collaboration, educational development, and evidence-informed public decision-making. Removing financial barriers to reading allows research to reach scholars, teachers, students, policymakers, practitioners, and the wider public.

The journal aims to increase the visibility and potential impact of peer-reviewed scholarship while maintaining research integrity and rigorous editorial assessment.

Section 02

Immediate and Free Reader Access

Published articles are accessible through the official JESS website immediately upon publication. Readers are not required to pay subscription fees, pay-per-view charges, or article access fees to read or download the published full text.

No embargo is imposed on access to articles on the journal website. Free reader access must not be confused with the journal's separately disclosed Article Processing Charge for authors.

Section 03

Creative Commons Licensing

Articles explicitly identified as being published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) may be shared and adapted in any medium or format, including for commercial purposes, provided the conditions of that license are met.

CC BY 4.0 requires appropriate attribution, a reference to the license, and an indication of changes where applicable. Users must not imply that the original authors or JESS endorse their reuse or adaptation.

The license displayed on an individual article governs that article. Previously published articles, excluded third-party material, or content bearing different licensing information must be treated according to their respective rights statements.

Official license information: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International .

Section 04

Permitted Reuse of CC BY 4.0 Content

The following examples describe permissions for content actually covered by CC BY 4.0; they do not automatically extend to material carrying a different license.

Section 05

Attribution Requirements

When sharing, reproducing, or adapting material licensed under CC BY 4.0, users must provide appropriate credit in a reasonable manner for the medium of reuse. Where available, attribution should identify:

  1. The original author or authors and title of the article;
  2. The journal name, publication year, and relevant bibliographic information;
  3. The article DOI or permanent URL;
  4. The applicable Creative Commons license and a link to its terms; and
  5. Whether the material has been modified, translated, or adapted.

Suggested form: [Author(s)]. ([Year]). [Article title]. JESS (Journal of Education on Social Science), [volume(issue)], [pages/article number]. [DOI]. CC BY 4.0. [Indicate changes, if any].

Section 06

Copyright and Author Rights

Copyright ownership, permissions granted to the journal, and the rights retained by authors are determined by the copyright and licensing terms applicable to the published article.

An open license permits specified reuse; it does not remove the obligation to acknowledge the authors or respect rights outside that license.

Authors are responsible for identifying copyrighted third-party material and obtaining permission when required.

For journal-specific provisions, consult Right and Licenses .

Section 07

Repository Deposit and Self-Archiving

JESS supports the responsible sharing of research through institutional repositories, disciplinary repositories, academic websites, and other scholarly platforms where permitted by the relevant article license.

When depositing a published article, authors should identify JESS as the original publication venue, preserve its citation and license notice, and provide a DOI or permanent URL.

Repository records should distinguish the submitted manuscript, accepted manuscript, and published version, as applicable.

For material published under CC BY 4.0, redistribution of the licensed material is permitted without a license-imposed embargo, subject to applicable third-party rights.

Section 08

Educational, Research, and Policy Reuse

JESS encourages the lawful use of openly licensed research in teaching, literature reviews, scholarly presentations, research synthesis, and evidence-informed policy discussions.

Users who summarize, interpret, translate, or adapt findings should represent the original research accurately, indicate modifications where required, and avoid implying endorsement by the authors or journal.

Section 09

Third-Party Materials and Permissions

Figures, photographs, maps, tables, questionnaires, excerpts, datasets, or other items credited to third parties may be subject to separate copyright and licensing conditions.

Such items are not necessarily covered by an article's Creative Commons license.

Users must review credit lines and rights notices and obtain additional permission when required.

Authors are responsible for securing necessary permissions before publication.

Section 10

Open Access and Publication Charges

JESS distinguishes free reader access from author-side publication charges. The following amounts should be read together with the current official Publication Fee policy.

Authors should verify the latest information before submission or payment.

Publication fees must be communicated transparently and must not determine editorial decisions.

See the official Publication Fee page for payment and administrative information.

Section 11

Editorial Independence and Peer Review

Open-access publication does not reduce JESS's expectations for scholarly quality, research ethics, or independent peer review.

Editorial decisions should be based on academic merit, originality, relevance, methodological soundness, and ethical compliance.

Payment of an Article Processing Charge does not guarantee acceptance, and publication-fee arrangements must not influence reviewer recommendations or independent editorial judgment.

Section 12

Discoverability, Indexing, and Computational Use

Open access facilitates discovery, citation, indexing, and reuse of scholarly literature.

JESS encourages responsible linking to official article pages and accurate citation of the published record.

Computational research, including text analysis of licensed content, should comply with applicable copyright licenses, privacy obligations, website security requirements, and other relevant laws.

Section 13

Research Data and Supplementary Materials

Open access to an article does not automatically make all underlying research data available for unrestricted public use.

Interview transcripts, confidential documents, identifiable participant information, and separately licensed datasets may be subject to consent, ethics, privacy, and legal restrictions.

Authors should clearly identify any distinct reuse conditions applicable to supplemental files, research data, software, and other research materials.

Section 14

Corrections, Retractions, and the Scholarly Record

Open access does not prevent JESS from correcting the published record.

Corrections, expressions of concern, and retractions may be issued when appropriate under the journal's publication-ethics procedures.

Readers and repository managers should check whether an article has been corrected or retracted and maintain links to any associated notices where technically possible.

Section 15

International Principles and Related Policies

This statement is informed by widely recognized principles for transparent scholarly publishing and clearly communicated open-access, copyright, and licensing information.
