Licensing Policy

JESS (Journal of Education on Social Science), published by the Faculty of Social Science, Universitas Negeri Padang, Indonesia, is committed to transparent licensing, responsible scholarly dissemination, and the protection of intellectual property rights.

This Licensing Policy establishes the terms governing the use, distribution, reproduction, adaptation, and reuse of scholarly articles published under the journal's open-access publishing framework.

JESS supports open scholarly communication by making published research accessible and by clearly identifying the rights available to authors, readers, researchers, educators, institutions, and other users.

Articles published under this policy are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) , unless a different valid license is expressly identified on the individual publication. Previously published articles retain their applicable original licensing terms.

OPEN LICENSING COMMITMENT

JESS promotes the lawful sharing, adaptation, and dissemination of scholarly research. Articles covered by CC BY 4.0 may be reused for educational, research, public, and commercial purposes, provided that the license conditions are fulfilled.

The applicable license is determined by the rights statement associated with each published article.

Section 01

Purpose and Scope of the Licensing Policy

This policy defines the conditions under which published scholarly content may be accessed, copied, distributed, translated, adapted, reproduced, and reused.

The policy applies to scholarly articles published by JESS under its stated licensing arrangements.

It is intended to:

  1. Provide clear information about the applicable publication license;
  2. Protect authors' intellectual contributions and copyright interests;
  3. Explain the permissions granted to readers and subsequent users;
  4. Establish transparent attribution and reuse requirements;
  5. Support responsible dissemination through scholarly repositories and research platforms; and
  6. Ensure consistency between licensing, copyright, and open-access policies.

The licensing terms identified on an individual published article remain authoritative for that work.

Section 02

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License

JESS uses the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) for articles published under this licensing framework.

CC BY 4.0 is an internationally recognized open license that permits the sharing and adaptation of licensed materials, including commercial reuse, subject to appropriate attribution and other applicable license conditions.

Under this license, users may exercise the licensed rights without requesting separate permission from the copyright holder, provided that the license terms are respected.

The license grants worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free permissions within its stated scope and is irrevocable while its terms are followed.

The full and legally authoritative license text is available at:

https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

This journal policy explains how the license applies to JESS publications but does not modify or replace the official Creative Commons legal terms.

Section 03

Copyright Ownership and Author Rights

Under the author-retained copyright arrangement established by this policy, authors retain copyright ownership of their original scholarly contributions.

Authors grant JESS a non-exclusive right of first publication and permission to publish, reproduce, distribute, and identify the journal as the original place of publication.

The journal does not require transfer of copyright ownership under this arrangement.

Authors retain the right to reuse their own work and to authorize additional uses consistent with their copyright ownership and any applicable third-party rights.

Authors must ensure that they possess the necessary rights to submit and license the manuscript, including permission to incorporate any protected third-party materials.

Copyright arrangements agreed for previously published articles are not retroactively replaced by this policy.

For additional information, consult: Right and Licenses .

Section 04

Rights Granted to Readers and Users

For articles covered by CC BY 4.0, readers and other users may exercise the following rights without obtaining separate permission, subject to the license conditions.

These permissions do not override privacy, publicity, trademark, patent, or other rights that may exist independently of copyright.

Section 05

Attribution and Citation Requirements

Appropriate attribution is a fundamental condition of CC BY 4.0 licensing.

Users who share or adapt licensed materials must acknowledge the original creators and retain relevant copyright and licensing notices where provided.

Attribution should include, where reasonably available:

  1. The original author or authors;
  2. The title of the published article;
  3. The journal title, JESS (Journal of Education on Social Science);
  4. The year of publication and bibliographic details;
  5. The DOI or permanent URL of the published work;
  6. A reference or link to the CC BY 4.0 license; and
  7. An indication of modifications when changes have been made.

Attribution must be reasonable for the medium and context of reuse.

It must not falsely imply endorsement, sponsorship, or approval by the original authors, JESS, or Universitas Negeri Padang.

Section 06

Recommended Attribution Format

When redistributing or adapting JESS articles licensed under CC BY 4.0, users are encouraged to provide sufficient information for the original publication to be identified.

Example:

[Author Name(s)]. ([Year]). [Article Title]. JESS (Journal of Education on Social Science) , [Volume(Issue)], [Pages or Article Number]. [DOI]. Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). [Changes indicated, if applicable].

This is an illustrative attribution format rather than a mandatory citation style.

Reusers may follow an appropriate discipline-specific citation standard, provided that the applicable Creative Commons attribution conditions are met.

Section 07

Commercial and Non-Commercial Reuse

CC BY 4.0 permits both commercial and non-commercial reuse of licensed material.

Commercial use may include reproduction or adaptation of licensed content in books, instructional products, professional resources, research publications, and other commercial materials.

Such reuse must comply with the applicable attribution and other licensing conditions.

JESS does not impose an additional non-commercial restriction on material explicitly licensed under CC BY 4.0.

Content distributed under another valid license, including any license with a non-commercial condition, remains governed by the terms of that specific license.

Section 08

Adaptation, Translation, and Derivative Works

CC BY 4.0 allows users to translate, modify, adapt, and build upon licensed materials.

When sharing adapted material, users must provide the required attribution and indicate that modifications have been made.

Adaptations should not misrepresent original research findings, author positions, or the scholarly conclusions contained in the source article.

The creation or distribution of an adaptation must not imply that it is an official revised publication of JESS or that its content has been endorsed by the journal.

Users remain responsible for any legal rights or restrictions not covered by the Creative Commons license.

Section 09

Third-Party Copyrighted Materials

Some JESS articles may incorporate material originating from third-party copyright holders.

Examples include:

  • Photographs and illustrations;
  • Maps, figures, and diagrams;
  • Copyrighted tables or excerpts;
  • Research instruments and questionnaires;
  • Data, software, or supplementary materials; and
  • Other materials reproduced under separate permissions.

Third-party material is not necessarily covered by the article's CC BY 4.0 license when a separate rights statement applies.

Authors must identify relevant third-party content and obtain necessary permissions before publication.

Users must review copyright notices, credit lines, and permissions before reusing excluded materials.

Section 10

Author Self-Archiving and Repository Distribution

Authors of JESS articles licensed under CC BY 4.0 may deposit and redistribute the licensed published version in institutional and disciplinary repositories.

Authors may also share licensed publications through personal academic websites, research profiles, and other legitimate scholarly platforms.

Deposited records should identify:

  1. The original publication in JESS;
  2. The author or authors;
  3. The publication year, volume, and issue;
  4. The DOI or official article URL;
  5. The applicable license; and
  6. The version of the deposited manuscript.

The CC BY 4.0 license does not impose an embargo on redistribution of licensed content.

Articles published under different licenses or agreements remain subject to their own self-archiving terms.

Section 11

Rights of the Journal and Publisher

Under the non-exclusive publishing arrangement described in this policy, JESS receives permission from authors to publish their accepted articles and identify the journal as the original place of publication.

These rights include the ability to host, distribute, display, preserve, and provide access to the published version through the journal's official publishing platform.

The journal may distribute article metadata and bibliographic information to legitimate scholarly indexing and discovery systems, subject to applicable legal and contractual conditions.

The non-exclusive publication arrangement does not by itself transfer ownership of the article's copyright to JESS.

The journal's own trademarks, logos, website layout, and original administrative materials are not automatically licensed under the Creative Commons license applicable to journal articles.

Section 12

Research Data and Supplementary Material Licensing

Publication of an open-access article does not automatically place its underlying research datasets under the same license.

Research data, software, interview materials, questionnaires, and supplementary resources may be governed by separate reuse conditions.

Authors must distinguish between the license applied to an article and any license applied to separately distributed research materials.

Privacy, confidentiality, informed consent, ethical approvals, and applicable legal requirements must continue to be respected.

Authors are encouraged to provide clear licensing information for supplementary materials whenever such resources are publicly shared.

Section 13

License Information and Publication Metadata

JESS is committed to communicating article-level licensing information transparently.

The applicable copyright and license should be identified clearly on published articles and their associated bibliographic records.

Where supported by the publishing system, licensing information should be included consistently in:

  • Article landing pages;
  • Published PDF or HTML full-text files;
  • Article metadata;
  • Repository deposits; and
  • Relevant scholarly indexing records.

The journal seeks to maintain consistency between its website policy statements, article-level notices, and available publication metadata.

If licensing information appears inconsistent, readers and authors may contact the editorial office for clarification.

Section 14

License Compliance, Restrictions, and Limitations

Users must comply with the conditions of the applicable publication license.

For CC BY 4.0 content, users must provide appropriate attribution and comply with other relevant conditions of the license.

Users must not impose additional legal or technological restrictions that prevent recipients from exercising rights granted by CC BY 4.0.

The license does not grant permission to misuse author identities, falsely imply endorsement, or disregard independently applicable privacy, publicity, trademark, and other legal rights.

Rights arising under applicable exceptions and limitations to copyright are not restricted by this policy.

If a user fails to comply with a Creative Commons license, the consequences and any reinstatement of rights are determined by the official license terms.

Section 15

Relationship with Other Journal Policies

This Licensing Policy should be read together with the journal's Copyright, Open Access, Publication Ethics, and Author Guidelines policies.

JESS aims to ensure that its licensing provisions remain consistent with the actual rights granted to authors and readers.

Any future changes to the journal's licensing framework should be communicated transparently.

Changes to journal policy must not automatically revoke or replace licenses already validly granted for previously published works.

Section 16

International Licensing Principles and References

This policy is informed by recognized international principles concerning open-access publication, transparent licensing, and responsible management of intellectual property rights.

Relevant resources include:

These resources provide international reference points and do not replace the legally binding terms of the actual license attached to a publication.
