Copyright Notice

JESS (Journal of Education on Social Science), published by the Faculty of Social Science, Universitas Negeri Padang, Indonesia, recognizes and respects the intellectual property rights of authors and supports the responsible dissemination of scholarly knowledge.

This Copyright Notice establishes the principles governing copyright ownership, authors' rights, publication permissions, and the reuse of scholarly articles published in JESS.

Under the copyright arrangement established by this policy, authors retain copyright in their original scholarly contributions while granting JESS the non-exclusive right of first publication and the permissions necessary to disseminate their accepted articles.

Articles published under this policy are made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) , unless another valid license is expressly identified. The original rights and licensing arrangements for previously published articles remain applicable.

COPYRIGHT AND AUTHOR RIGHTS COMMITMENT

JESS supports author-retained copyright, non-exclusive publishing rights, and transparent open-access licensing. The journal recognizes authors as the intellectual creators of their original scholarly work and promotes responsible reuse through appropriate attribution.

Copyright ownership and the applicable publication license must be clearly distinguished. An open-access license grants defined reuse permissions without automatically transferring ownership of copyright.

Section 01

Copyright Ownership

Authors who publish original scholarly articles in JESS under this policy retain copyright ownership of their work.

Copyright retention means that authors remain the copyright holders of their original intellectual contributions, subject to any applicable agreements with employers, institutions, funding organizations, co-authors, or other rights holders.

Publication in JESS does not require authors to transfer ownership of their copyright to the journal or publisher under this arrangement.

Where copyright is held jointly or by an institution, the corresponding author must ensure that the necessary authorization to publish and license the work has been obtained.

The copyright arrangements applicable to articles published before the adoption of this policy remain governed by their original publication terms.

Section 02

Right of First Publication

By submitting an article for publication and agreeing to the journal's publication terms, authors authorize JESS to publish the accepted work as its original scholarly publication.

Under this policy, authors grant JESS a non-exclusive right of first publication and the necessary permissions to:

  1. Publish the accepted article in the journal;
  2. Identify JESS as the original publication venue;
  3. Make the published article accessible through the official journal website;
  4. Reproduce and distribute the published version in accordance with its applicable license;
  5. Disseminate bibliographic metadata and article information through legitimate scholarly discovery services; and
  6. Maintain and preserve the published scholarly record.

Granting these permissions does not constitute an exclusive transfer of copyright ownership from the authors to the journal.

Section 03

Creative Commons Licensing

JESS applies the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) to articles published under its current open-licensing framework.

This license allows users to share, copy, redistribute, translate, adapt, and build upon the licensed article, including for commercial purposes.

These rights are granted subject to the applicable license conditions, including appropriate attribution, a reference to the license, and identification of modifications where relevant.

The copyright holder retains ownership of the work while granting the public the permissions specified by the license.

The applicable license displayed on each published article determines the rights granted for that particular publication.

The official CC BY 4.0 license is available at:

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License

Section 04

Rights Retained by Authors

Under the author-retained copyright arrangement, authors continue to exercise rights over their original scholarly contributions.

Subject to applicable co-author agreements, third-party rights, and other legal obligations, authors may undertake the following activities:

Subsequent distribution of the published article should acknowledge JESS as the original publication venue and provide the applicable citation and license information.

Section 05

Author Responsibilities and Copyright Compliance

Authors are responsible for ensuring that manuscripts submitted to JESS respect applicable copyright and intellectual property laws.

Authors are expected to:

  1. Submit original scholarly contributions or clearly disclose and justify any previously disseminated material;
  2. Ensure that all individuals listed as authors have agreed to the manuscript submission and publication arrangements;
  3. Confirm that they hold the rights necessary to publish and license the work;
  4. Obtain permission for third-party copyrighted materials when required;
  5. Accurately acknowledge sources, quotations, illustrations, and other reused materials;
  6. Disclose any relevant copyright limitations or restrictions before publication; and
  7. Cooperate with the editorial office in resolving legitimate copyright or permission concerns.

Authors must not grant the journal permissions that they do not legally possess.

The submission and publication of a manuscript must also comply with the journal's Publication Ethics and Authorship Criteria policies.

Section 06

Rights of Readers and Subsequent Users

Articles published under CC BY 4.0 may be reused by readers, educators, researchers, institutions, and other users in accordance with the license.

Permitted uses include:

  • Reading and downloading published articles;
  • Copying and distributing licensed content;
  • Reproducing articles in lawful scholarly and educational activities;
  • Translating licensed materials;
  • Creating and distributing adaptations;
  • Using licensed content in commercial and non-commercial activities; and
  • Redistributing licensed materials through legitimate digital or printed media.

Users must provide appropriate attribution, identify modifications when required, and avoid suggesting endorsement by the authors, JESS, or Universitas Negeri Padang.

These permissions apply to material covered by the relevant license and do not override independently applicable legal rights.

Section 07

Attribution and Recognition of Authorship

JESS recognizes proper attribution as an essential principle of scholarly communication and copyright compliance.

When sharing or adapting material licensed under CC BY 4.0, users must provide appropriate credit to the original creators.

Attribution should include, where reasonably available:

  1. The names of the original authors;
  2. The title of the published article;
  3. The name of the journal;
  4. The publication year and relevant bibliographic details;
  5. The DOI or permanent article URL;
  6. The applicable Creative Commons license; and
  7. An indication of any modifications made to the original material.

Attribution must not falsely imply that the original authors or publisher approve, endorse, or sponsor subsequent reuse.

Section 08

Third-Party Copyrighted Materials

Articles published by JESS may include materials for which copyright is owned by parties other than the article authors.

Such materials may include:

  • Photographs and illustrations;
  • Maps, charts, and diagrams;
  • Previously published tables and figures;
  • Copyrighted textual excerpts;
  • Research instruments and questionnaires;
  • Software, datasets, and supplementary resources; and
  • Other materials subject to separate ownership or licensing rights.

Third-party content is not automatically covered by an article's Creative Commons license when a separate rights statement or legal restriction applies.

Users must examine relevant credit lines, copyright notices, and permissions before reproducing excluded materials.

Additional authorization may be required from the relevant copyright holder.

Section 09

Author Self-Archiving and Repository Rights

JESS supports responsible dissemination of published research through institutional repositories, disciplinary repositories, and legitimate scholarly platforms.

Authors may deposit and redistribute the published version of articles licensed under CC BY 4.0 in accordance with the terms of that license.

Repository deposits should provide appropriate bibliographic information and identify JESS as the original publication venue.

Authors should include the article's DOI or official URL, the applicable license, and an accurate indication of the manuscript version.

Articles subject to different copyright arrangements must be shared in accordance with the terms that apply to those publications.

Section 10

Moral Rights and Scholarly Integrity

JESS respects the moral rights of authors as recognized by applicable law.

These rights may include the right to be identified as the creator of the work and rights relating to the integrity of authorship.

Open licensing does not authorize false attribution, plagiarism, fraudulent representation, or the misleading presentation of research findings.

Users who translate or adapt scholarly content should accurately identify modifications and distinguish their contributions from those of the original authors.

Nothing in this policy should be interpreted as waiving non-waivable moral rights protected by applicable law.

Section 11

Copyright Notice on Published Articles

Published articles should display clear copyright and licensing information.

For articles published under this author-retained copyright arrangement, JESS recommends the following notice:

Copyright © [Year] by the Author(s).

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), which permits use, sharing, distribution, reproduction, and adaptation in any medium or format, including for commercial purposes, provided that appropriate credit is given to the original author(s) and source, a link to the license is provided, and changes are indicated where applicable.

https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

This recommended notice must be adapted to reflect the actual copyright holder, publication year, and license of the individual article.

Article-specific copyright notices take precedence where a valid different arrangement applies.

Section 12

Copyright and Licensing Metadata

JESS seeks to communicate copyright ownership and licensing information consistently across its publishing platform and article records.

Where supported by the journal's publishing system, relevant information should be presented in the following locations:

  • Article landing pages;
  • Published PDF and HTML files;
  • Article-level publication metadata;
  • Repository records;
  • Relevant indexing and discovery services; and
  • The journal's official copyright and licensing policy pages.

Copyright and license statements should accurately reflect the legal terms applicable to each publication.

Any identified inconsistency should be reviewed by the editorial office and corrected where appropriate.

Section 13

Copyright Disputes and Alleged Infringement

JESS takes legitimate copyright complaints and allegations of unauthorized use of protected materials seriously.

Concerns may involve alleged unauthorized reproduction, disputed ownership, missing permissions, inaccurate attribution, or other possible copyright violations.

Individuals or organizations submitting a copyright complaint should provide sufficient information for the editorial office to understand and assess the concern.

Relevant information may include:

  1. Identification of the affected JESS article;
  2. Identification of the allegedly protected material;
  3. Information demonstrating ownership or authorization;
  4. A description of the alleged infringement; and
  5. Supporting documents or other relevant evidence.

The editorial office should review such concerns fairly, seek clarification where necessary, and provide relevant parties with an appropriate opportunity to respond.

Where justified, corrective action may include clarification, updating attribution or permissions, issuing a correction, or taking further action in accordance with applicable law and the journal's publication-ethics procedures.

Section 14

Previously Published Articles and Existing Rights

Copyright and licensing arrangements previously established for articles published by JESS remain subject to their original valid terms.

Adoption or revision of this Copyright Notice does not automatically transfer copyright, replace an existing license, or retroactively change rights that have already been granted.

Where previously published articles display different copyright holders, Creative Commons licenses, or contractual arrangements, those terms must be respected.

The journal should avoid presenting older publications as governed by a new license without an appropriate legal basis and authorization.

Requests to clarify historical copyright arrangements may be directed to the editorial office.

Section 15

Relationship with Journal Policies

This Copyright Notice should be read together with the journal's Licensing Policy, Open Access Statement, Publication Ethics, and Author Guidelines.

The journal aims to maintain clear and consistent information about copyright ownership, publication rights, and permitted reuse of scholarly content.
